In our technology-driven world, there are electrical connections just about everywhere you could imagine. When it comes to mobile applications, particularly in the automotive industry, the idea is much the same but everything is powered by a battery.

That is where battery connectors can become invaluable. In this guide, you will learn more about what battery connectors are, what they do, and the various types that you may run into over time.

What Does a Battery Connector Do?

Before we can learn more about battery connectors, it helps to know what it is they do. Battery connectors act as both an electrical and mechanical part. This part interfaces with a battery in electronic gadgets and vehicles. It is used to separate or interface the various electrical circuits.

Battery connectors come in different sizes, shapes, and tones. Below, we will learn about the different types of connectors. More importantly, the uses and applications of each of these battery connectors and how they can prove valuable in repairs and installations.

Wire/Cable-to-Board Connectors

With so many residential and business technological applications, battery connectors will become a necessity. The wire-to-board connector associates a link/wire to a PCB. The wires are very similar to the wire-to-wire associations and are typically either patched or pressed-in two-piece connectors. That said, there are some card edge variants out there that you may run into but these are far less common than the aforementioned types.

These can be tougher to identify because the mating interface is very similar visually to the wire-to-wire connector. There are a litany of different applications for wire-to-board connectors because the pattern is meant to exploit the advantages inherent in insulation-displacement connectors (IDCs). Moreover, this type of connector – like most battery connectors – is adept at standing up to extreme heat, freezing temperatures, and lopsided setups that could otherwise cause disruption.

Wire/Cable-Wire Connectors

For this type of battery connector, there are two wires (as the name implies). One of the connectors will be permanently associated with the wire. The opposite finish then works to frame a more distinguishable interface. There can be a perpetual association made by embedding the protected wire into a honed metal pillar.

It is the sharp edges of the bar that are great for slicing through the protection and ultimately make a metal-to-metal contact that is inflexible. This connection is between both the wire and pillar, creating a more stable connection in many applications.

Board-to-Board Connectors

Finally, there are board-to-board connectors. These are generally used to associate PCBs that don’t already have a link. Board-to-board connectors are great for saving space on links, which means they far more reasonable for use in frameworks where there isn’t much space to work with. Board-to-board connectors can take the frustration out of those installations, making them far faster, and easier to complete.

The PCBs using a board-to-board connector can be associated by utilizing connectors that are in both an equal or opposite setup. The connector that ultimately associates the two PCBs will do so in a stacking design that is otherwise known as a mezzanine connector. Generally speaking, the term of board-to-board connector is used to make clear the one next to or opposite the PCB.

Waterproof Automotive Connectors

There is another variant of the battery connector that is waterproof. These are used in automotive applications, particularly for use in electrical frameworks on a vehicle. Because of the frequent use of chips in vehicles, the right battery connector can ensure that there is a solid flow rating, proper fit, and viable thickness to ensure the commitment of power.
