Though iPhones are the most popular smartphones in the nation, they’re not without their problems. In addition to the technical problems that make users most frustrated, they’re also on the fragile side.

In fact, without a heavy-duty protective case, your iPhone won’t last long. Because the entire thing is encased in glass, even the back can shatter after you drop your phone.

What can you do about a cracked iPhone back? Is there a way to fix an iPhone after it shatters or are you better off getting a new one?

Read on to learn more about how to fix a broken iPhone back (or at least protect it from getting worse).

Why Is a Cracked iPhone Back a Problem?

It’s happened to all of us at least once: you drop your phone on the ground and pick it up only to discover that the glass is shattered. It’s easy to assume that when the damage is on the back of the phone, rather than the screen, it isn’t a big deal. The truth is that there are some problems that can arise when the back of your iPhone is cracked.

Potential for Water Damage

iPhones are powerful pieces of technology, but they’re also quite slender. That means that the entire operating system is close to the surface.

When your phone is intact, that operating system is protected by layers of glass and metal. Once the glass shatters, however, substances like liquid have an easier way to get inside of your phone, causing serious or permanent damage.

Injury Risk

When the glass on an iPhone breaks, it doesn’t usually just crack in one direction. It either shatters immediately or over time.

That glass can start to become fragmented into small pieces. With a cracked iPhone back, you run the risk of getting those small pieces in your skin every time you handle your phone.

Compromised Aesthetic

If the back of your phone cracks, it’s usually because you were using it without a protective case. Most people who forgo a case do so because they like the sleek aesthetic of a bare iPhone.

Once the back is cracked, you’re not going to enjoy that sleek aesthetic anymore. While a cracked back panel may not compromise the use of the phone as much as a cracked screen would, it will still make your phone look older and less attractive.

Can You Fix All Models With a Broken iPhone Back?

Believe it or not, fixing the back panel on an iPhone is easier with some models than it is with others. In fact, some of the older models, like the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, are not designed for a quick fix in this department. That back panel is directly connected to some of the internal system, so removing it and replacing it means tampering with a lot of tiny tech.

You’re in the best position to fix a cracked iPhone back if you have an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Plus. The back panel is removable and replaceable, but you’re probably still going to want someone with experience to do it for you. Other variations of the iPhone 14 (e.g., the iPhone 14 Pro) present a little extra difficulty because the glass panel is glued into place.

Possible Solutions to Fix the Back of an iPhone

So, what’s the fix here? As we mentioned already, some models are easier to fix than others, but a professional can usually do it even if it’s difficult. Let’s take a look at your options so that you can make the best decision for your damaged iPhone.

Put a Case On It

First and foremost, you’re going to want to protect your iPhone from further damage. Not only does a cracked back present the problems we’ve mentioned above, but it’s likely to get worse over time. A solid protective case will protect the back panel and the phone as a whole so that it doesn’t accrue more significant damage if you drop it again.

Keep in mind that this isn’t a permanent fix. It will probably help you to get more life out of your iPhone, but it doesn’t solve the problem so much as put a bandage on it.

Try Clear Packing Tape

Another temporary option, if you don’t have a case to use right away, is to cover the back with clear packing tape. This will keep the broken pieces in place so that they can’t come off on your hands and it may help to protect your phone from further damage.

This is only something you should rely on for a few days until you can get a case and/or get your phone to a professional for iPhone repairs. The tape will come off eventually and may pull off more pieces of glass in the process.

Upgrade to a New Phone

Depending on the age and condition of your iPhone, it may make more sense to upgrade. For example, if you have an iPhone 8, you might find that these kinds of iPhone repairs cost more than a new phone. If you’re in a pinch, find out if your provider is offering any older models at a reduced price.

Call the Professionals

If you’re attached to your current phone and want a long-term fix, don’t go the DIY route. The only reliable way to fix the back of an iPhone after it cracks is to hire a professional like the one found here. Taking apart an iPhone is risky business and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you’re bound to cause permanent damage.

Cracked iPhone Back? Proceed With Caution

If you’re dealing with a cracked iPhone back, it’s time to make some moves. Protect your phone and your skin by using a case until you can replace or repair your phone professionally.
